JUST months from a state election, the Western Australian Labor Party staged a bloodless coup in which party leader Jim McGinty was replaced by his deputy Dr Geoff Gallop, this week, ten years ago. In stepping down, Mr McGinty told a news conference his decision was difficult to make, but he felt it was important the party improved its stocks before the next election. Launching his leadership at the same conference, Dr Gallop claimed the Liberal Party’s far-reaching industrial reform agreements was frightening families. The speech came just hours after WMC Ltd announced a restructuring plan for its Kambalda and St Ives operations, which would see 445 permanent employees made redundant in place of contractors.
