A group advising the Minerals Council of Australia on sustainability familiarised itself with the Goldfields last week.

The tour of WA’s mining industry icon gave the group a feel for the history of minerals development in the area - what had been done well, what had not, and the issues that were still to be addressed.

"We need to be able to pass on the favourable social and environmental dimensions of the industry to people who have the ability to influence community opinion and attitudes on the east coast of Australia," the MCA’s External Sustainable Development Advisory Group chair, Ros Kelly, said.

The visit included tours of Placer Dome’s Kanowna Belle operation, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines’ Super Pit, and WMC Resources’ nickel smelter.
