Surfing, cycling and yoga in the mix

THE thought of an energetic, heath-conscious holiday can be an appealing option for those determined to avoid overindulgence at Christmas, or throughout Western Australia’s long, hot summer. There’s a range of activities to consider, from an overseas cycling holiday to something a little closer to home, such as a surfing and yoga retreat down at Margaret River. For road cycling and Tour de France enthusiasts, XTC Cross Training Centre will lead its annual road cycling holiday to France in May. Led by French-born Christophe Borrel, who runs a Perth fitness studio, the tour will take cyclists through some of the most challenging regions of France and cross from the east of the Pyrenees over 22 mountain passes. Now in its third year, the tour will take cyclists through famous stages of the Tour de France, including the Col d’Aubisque and Col du Tourmalet. The fully guided tour covers about 90 kilometres a day, so participants will need confidence in their road cycling ability, a well-equipped road bike and a high level of fitness. An Australian resident for the past 16 years, Mr Borrel said the idea for the tour was born out of a desire to offer more challenging rides. “I’m already involved in a cycling group and although there are lots of cycling groups in Perth, the locations are limited,” he said. Despite Mr Borrel’s knowledge of the French geography and language, the tour will involve local guides over a course that’s achievable for intermediate level cyclists. For those wanting to receive the benefits yoga, surf and ‘vitality foods’ will bring to their lives, Samundra retreat is offering a relaxing week down south in Yallingup to experience all three. The week at Samundra includes one surfing lesson per day, twice-daily yoga lessons, wholesome vegetarian meals, surfing equipment and other activities. Guests stay in four-star twin-share accommodation and need to bring only comfortable clothes for yoga and a hat, bathers and a towel. Samundra also hosts retreats in Byron Bay, Morocco and the Maldives.
