Perth will host the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships at Scarborough beach in April 2022, a competition estimated to attract 8,000 visitors to the state.

The championships, scheduled to take place from April 2-10, will include more than 480 beach and ocean events and bring together members from 315 Australian surf clubs from around the country.

The main events and a family-friendly festival zone will be at Scarborough beach while sprints and relays will take place at Trigg and board riding at Secret Harbour.

According to the state government, securing events like this attracts significant numbers of competitors, supporters and spectators from outside and within WA.

It said the 2022 event had the potential to attract more than 8,000 competitors, visitors, spectators and support crew to WA, who would spend money at local businesses.

Visitors will be encouraged to explore the state and 'wander out yonder' while they are here.

When the event was last held in Perth in 2018, more than 8,500 visitors stayed for nearly 69,000 visitor nights generating about $15.8 million.

This year the competition was held on the Sunshine Coast.
