Gavin Construction has begun construction on the nation’s most efficient industrial laundry, at the Gap Ridge industrial estate in Karratha.

The 5-star Green Star facility, which will recycle 100 per cent of all water used for washing, has been specifically designed to deal with water constraints in the Pilbara.

The laundry will have the capacity to wash 750 sets of bed linen and more than 1,000 work garments each hour.

The plant’s operator, MCM Linen, expects to employ around 50 staff at capacity.

The facility is expected to significantly reduce turnaround times for clean laundry for Pilbara mining operators, hospitals, hotels and restaurants, with the average turnaround for washing currently between 7 and 14 days.

MCM Linen will offer a guaranteed 24-hour return service once the plant is operational.

Gavin Construction project and business development manager Ronan Cosgrove said the laundry development gave the company the opportunity to showcase its capabilities as a leading designer and builder of industrial facilities.

“The success of our projects can be attributed to many things, however, early contractor involvement is a key aspect,” Mr Cosgrove said.

“Ensuring fundamental decisions that affect quality, safety, energy efficiency, project cost and asset value are considered at the initial stages of the project.

“Our in-house design team specialises in industrial facilities and we have the experience and knowledge to advise our clients on these issues from the outset.

"Very often, these are the decisions that drive the project towards success.”

Construction on the plant kicked off on May 10, with the facility due to be completed by October.

The project follows the company's construction of the Blackwoods Distribution Centre in Karratha, which was the first industrial project Australia-wide to target a 5-star Green Star rating as constructed.

Gavin Construction also completed Karratha's Youth and Family Centre earlier this year, winning a Master Builders Association award for best commercial building under $6.5 million.
