State in next step towards 9pm trading

The state government has taken a step towards extended trading hours with Commerce Minister Troy Buswell today establishing a support group to advise small operators on commercial tenancy issues.

Mr Buswell said the small business advocate would work within the Small Business Development Corporation and provide specialist advice to the business community.

He added it was part of the government's move to extend retail weeknight trading hours, which is up for debate in parliament later this month.

If approved, retail hours could be extended as early as next month.

"This service will further bolster the commercial tenancy advisory service and small business advocacy service currently provided by the SBDC," Mr Buswell said.

"It is important small business operators know who to turn to for free, independent and impartial advice in relation to the rights of their business.

"A freecall 1800 telephone service and dedicated Small Business Advocate website will ensure advice and guidance is freely available to all who need it."

He added small business advocate is planned to be in place before the start of extended retail trading hours.

The move follows the government's decision to boost retail tenancy protections for small business through changes to existing legislation.

Amendments to the Commercial Tenancy (Retail Shops) Agreements Act 1985 are expected to be introduced to parliament next month.

The proposed reforms plan to provide greater protection and power to retail tenants in their leasing negotiations with landlords.
