State calls for input on Roe extension

The state government is inviting public comment on its latest plans for the contentious 5 kilometre, $620 million proposal to extend Roe Highway from the Kwinana Freeway to Stock Road.

The Environmental Protection Authority released a Public Environmental Review of the proposal today, which was based on an updated concept design released last month.

The updated plan for the road includes a potential road alignment between Bibra Drive and Progress Drive that would use land that has already been cleared for powerlines, and would minimise impacts on Roe Swamp.

Other changes included a realignment to the extension of Murdoch Drive, removal of a connections from Roe Highway to Forrest Road and from Bibra Drive to Roe Highway.

Mr Buswell said other changes to the plan, which were undertaken through consultation with community stakeholders, included bridges across wetlands, the use of a minimum width median and the use of retaining walls instead of embankments to reduce clearing in key areas.

"Once built, it will provide increased road safety through the reduction of heavy vehicles from Leach Highway and other local roads, reduced congestion on local roads including Farrington Road and South Street, lower air pollution and improved travel times," Mr Buswell said.

The PER is open for public submissions until September 12.
