St John of God Health Care has proposed to build a five-storey private hospital in its Midland precinct, estimated to cost almost $160 million, to replace the services acquired by the state government.

The proposed St John of God Midland private hospital will cover 16,815-square metres of land at 1 Clayton Street.

The hospital will include 96 overnight inpatient beds, six acute care environment beds, 24 bed short stay and day procedure units, four general theatres, two procedure rooms and a cardiac/vascular catheter laboratory.

St John of God Health Care engaged town planners Planning Solutions to compile its development application, which was lodged to the state government’s land agency Development WA.

The development has an estimated cost of $158.5 million, according to the development application.

St John of God Midland Public and Private Hospital (SJGMPPH) opened on Clayton Street in November 2015, comprising a 307-bed public hospital and a 60-bed private hospital.

However, the existing private facility at the hospital campus is scheduled to become a fully public 367-bed hospital in the 2026/27 financial year, the application said.

“In June 2023, state treasury triggered the contractual right to purchase the 60 private beds in the SJGMPPH for public patient use, effective from 1 July 2026,” the application reads.

“This has precipitated the need for a private hospital in Midland to provide a replacement of the private beds being subsumed into the public hospital service.

“In 2016, St John of God acquired the subject site for the purpose of a private hospital.”

Other features of the proposed private hospital include a 333-bay car park, new vehicle access, and an east-west pedestrian walkway.

According to the application, the proposed private hospital would be able to accommodate 230 staff at its peak.

The existing car park will be partially demolished to make way for the proposed development, if the proposal is approved.

St John of God Health Care previously announced site works were scheduled to start this year, pending approvals.
