THE Rotary Club of Scarborough’s Wheelchairs For Kids program is the benefactor of two projects that will help the organisation send wheelchairs to help victims of tsunami-affected Sri Lanka.
Paraplegic yachtsman Mike Rowney will depart on April 30 for a lone voyage around Australia in order to raise $100,000, which would be enough for 1,000 wheelchairs.
Mr Rowney has designed a special system enabling him to sail his 20-year-old, eight-metre yacht around the country.
The voyage will be a significant achievement for the 47-year-old, who became a paraplegic after an accident in 2001.
The organisation has also received a donation of $10,000 from recently listed local company, IBT Education.
IBT provides pre-university studies in Australia, the UK and throughout Asia, including Sri Lanka.
