Silver Thomas JV wins $200m contract

Perth-based architecture firm Silver Thomas Hanley, as part of a joint venture, will plan the major stage C redevelopment of South Australia's Lyell McEwin Hospital, with the project valued at $200 million.

Leading Perth health architecture and planning practice Silver Thomas Hanley, in a design collaboration with Adelaide-based practice Cheesman Architects, will plan the major Stage C redevelopment of South Australia's Lyell McEwin Hospital, it was announced today.

The $200 million project further cements Silver Thomas Hanley's strong position within the South Australian health infrastructure industry.

The three-stage redevelopment of the Lyell McEwin Hospital, estimated at a total value of $336 million, will transform the hospital into a major tertiary facility servicing the fast-growing northern suburbs of the State's capital.

Stage C of the Lyell McEwin redevelopment involves the design and construction of additional inpatient accommodation, ambulatory services, clinical and non-clinical support services, including education and research, and multi-deck car parking.

Silver Thomas Hanley, in conjunction with Cheesman Architects, has been involved in the project from day one, developing the masterplanning concept and being responsible for all the health service planning, health facility planning and detailed fit-out for the first two stages. The practice will now continue this work for Stage C.

Stage A, which was completed in 2004 at a cost of $100m, involved the construction of about 30,000sqm of new clinical and non-clinical accommodation.

Stage A won some 14 local and national awards including a national Master Builders Association Award for Excellence for a Commercial/Industrial Building over $30M and an Institute of Architects (SA) Merit Award for New Buildings.

The recently completed $50 million Stage B included a new 50-bed mental health unit, radiotherapy unit, ambulatory care centre and ward refurbishment.

Silver Thomas Hanley director Mike Hartfield, who leads the practice's South Australian activities, said the Stage C contract win was significant.

"This project continues a very successful relationship the practice has with South Australian-based Cheesman Architects and the SA Health Department that now extends for over a decade," Mr Hartfield said.

"Silver Thomas Hanley is Western Australia's premier health architecture and planning practice and it is pleasing that other regions such as South Australia recognise the quality of our expertise.

"We are also active in the Middle East, designing a ground-breaking health and wellness centre in Qatar and undertaking planning for three general hospitals and five integrated health centres for the significant single male expatriate labourer population."

Silver Thomas Hanley is currently involved in a number of other South Australian health projects including:

- New Ceduna Hospital - $40m;
- The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Stage 2 - $120m;
- The Women's and Children's Hospital Cancer Centre - $25m;
- Noarlunga GP Plus Health Centre - $25m;
- Modbury Hospital redevelopment masterplan, and
- Concept redevelopment masterplans for Whyalla, Berri and Barossa hospitals.
