Shire of Broome rejects anti-fracking motion

Buru Energy and the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association have commended the Shire of Broome for its decision to vote down an anti-gas declaration that sought to declare the region frack-free.

The council rejected the motion last night, a decision APPEA western region chief executive Stedman Ellis deemed a sensible decision.

“Councillors were correct to note that responsibility for approving resource projects rests with the state government,” Mr Ellis said.

“The Shire of Broome has sensibly chosen to embrace economic development for the region for rejecting the anti-gas scare campaign.”

Buru executive chairman Eric Streitberg said the Broome community and its shire representatives were among the many important stakeholder groups involved in the company’s gas exploration program in the Canning Basin.

“Buru has had a long, respectful and practical working relationship with the Broome shire and we will continue to work with them to ensure the community is fully informed about our activities and the benefits they have brought to the shire in the past and will continue to provide in the future,” he said.

Buru shares closed 2.7 per cent higher at 38 cents per share.
