Tony Sage’s push to add a rugby league team to his portfolio of investments is gathering steam, with the consortium he leads officially given the moniker Western Miners.

The consortium stressed, however, that the syndicate name was separate from a potential team name, which will be chosen through feedback with the Western Australian public.

Potential team names previously discussed include West Coast Dolphins, Western Diggers and Perth Miners.

Mr Sage, who owns A-League side Perth Glory, is setting up the bid in direct competition to the West Coast Pirates plan being spruiked by the Western Australian Rugby League.

The entrepreneur met with the NRL last month, and has reportedly guaranteed an investment of $100 million in the team over 10 years.

Mr Sage and the WARL’s bids are up against competition from NSW’s Central Coast, Central Queensland, Ipswich, Brisbane, Papua New Guinea and Wellington.
