A 21-storey apartment development aimed to activate the West Perth precinct has been green lit by a development assessment panel.

The Perth Local Development Assessment Panel today unanimously approved SKS Group’s proposal to build a $52 million development on 581-583 Murray Street, West Perth.

The development application, filed by Planning Solutions on behalf of SKS, sought approval to build 117 multiple dwellings, 84 serviced apartment, one commercial tenancy and 136 car parking bays across the 21-storey building.

According to the application, the subject site comprises two lots of a combined 2,573 square metres on the south-east corner of the Murray Street and Harvest Terrace intersection in West Perth.

Two low-rise commercial buildings, associated parking and hardstand areas are currently on the site.

Planning Solutions associate Matthew Cain said the development would grow the area’s residential population and activate the precinct after work hours.

City of Perth planning officer Julia Kingsbury said there were concerns about the proposed bulk and scale of the project but noted it would complement and activate the West Perth area.

JDAP acting deputy presiding member Brian Curtis commended the project team on working on a difficult site.

"The proposal is very good and particularly in the way it faces the street level," he said at the meeting.

"It brightens up a slightly dull corner at the moment."

The site has a land use for serviced apartments but the applicant sought for more flexibility for alternative categorisation, including hotel use.

Malaysian-based SKS Group previously developed Perth's Doubletree by Hilton hotels in Northbridge and Perth waterfront.

It is also behind The Groves apartments in Attadale and Modele Residence in Como.
