Roy Hill serves as springboard for Samsung

Roy Hill’s lead contractor, Samsung C&T, has been awarded a $2.7 billion design and construction contract for a major motorway in Sydney, cementing its position as a player in major Australian infrastructure projects only two years after entering the market.

Samsung, which was awarded a $5.6 billion contract to build the $10 billion Roy Hill iron ore mine in March 2013, announced today its second Australian contract would generate revenue of approximately $900 million over the next four years.

The South Korean conglomerate’s $2.7 billion contract to design and build the WestConnex M4 East motorway in Sydney is a joint venture with Leighton Contractors and John Holland.

It includes building a 5.5-kilometre tunnel with three lanes in each direction along Parramatta Road.

Construction on the entire WestConnex motorway, which over three stages will link Sydney’s west and south-west with the city, airport and port, is expected to finish in 2023.

Construction on Samsung’s joint venture portion of the project is expected to being next year and be completed by 2019.

A Samsung spokesperson said it would use skills learned at Roy Hill to deliver the Sydney project.

“Samsung C&T is on a fast track to establishing its name as a leader and key player in the civil infrastructure sector in Australia,” the spokesperson said.

“Samsung C&T has been successfully implementing Roy Hill, the largest mining project in the world with extensive experience in tunnelling and major infrastructure delivery internationally.”
