Rio Tinto has appointed Michael Fitzpatrick as independent, non-executive director of Rio Tinto plc and Rio Tinto Ltd. A former high-flying footballer, Mr Fitzpatrick is well known in Western Australia and in football circles as commissioner of the Australian Football League, and is a former chairman of the Australian Sports Commission. He recently sold his interest in, and ceased to be a director of, Hastings Funds Management Ltd, the infrastructure asset management company he founded in 1994. In addition to his position at Rio, Mr Fitzpatrick remains chairman of the Victorian Funds Management Corporation and of Treasury Group Ltd.
