Red lights turn green for climate

WITH personal vehicle use being a major contributor to carbon emissions, our government is being urged to follow the green lead of Canada and Europe and introduce left turn at red lights. Perth MLA John Hyde told parliament last week that his electorate would be ideal for trialling the practice, where cars may turn left at red lights if it is safe to do so. Hr Hyde said left turns at red lights was legally allowable throughout Australia and would decrease greenhouse gases from idling cars. He said with a strong pedestrian and cyclist awareness campaign for motorists, the practice would reduce unnecessary bottlenecks at intersections along Hay and Wellington Streets, and St Georges Terrace.
