Planning Blueprint

Tuesday, 22 April, 2003 - 22:00

THE State Government has released WA’s first statewide blueprint for planning and development along Western Australia's coast – the Coastal Statement of Planning Policy. The policy requires a 100-metre development setback to protect against coastal processes such as erosion and storms and provides guidance on how setbacks should be determined.

It discourages continuous linear development along the coast and encourages urban development to be concentrated around existing coastal settlements.

The new policy will be implemented through local government town planning schemes, and regional and local strategies. The Government will establish a new Coastal Planning and Co-ordination Council to oversee the development of State coastal planning strategy and legislation will be introduced to establish the Council as a statutory committee of the Western Australian Planning Commission.
