Western Australian pallet maker Pinetec has hired Chandler Macleod to recruit up to 50 people to fill permanent positions at its new sawmill near Western Power’s Muja power station near Collie.

The new sawmill will bring employment to the area, including sawmill operators, kiln operators, forklift drivers, supervisors and mechanical and electrical fitters.

At a cost of $16 million, Pinetec’s new sawmill will be one of the largest integrated sawmilling and pallet making plants in Australia.

Under agreement with Western Power it will be developed into the largest renewable energy project in WA.

Initial site preparation works have already started and operations are expected to begin in June.

In other regional employment news, the WA Government has launched a scheme to help create new jobs in the country.

The $500,000 Regional Industry Assistance Scheme will provide grants for small to medium-sized businesses to develop business plans and conduct relocation feasibility studies, market analysis and marketing plans.

The assistance will be available in two categories.

There will be a maximum of $10,000 to put towards business plans, relocation feasibility studies, market analysis and marketing plans, payable on evidence that a consultant has been paid and that contracted project and services have been under taken.

The second category involves grants of up to $10,000 for the purchase of or lease of equipment and other goods essential to the operation of the business.

In most cases, assistance will be limited to 75 per cent of the total costs of approved goods and services.
