Pindan, PACT win school contracts

Pindan Construction and PACT Constructions have been awarded contracts to build two new high schools in Perth, at a combined cost of $97 million.

Pindan has been awarded the contract to build the $53 million Butler High School in Perth's north and ABN Group subsidiary PACT Constructions will build the $44 million Baldivis High School, south of Perth.

Education Minister Liz Constable said building would begin soon on the schools, which are scheduled to open for the start of the 2013 school year.

"These schools will boast the latest in modern technology and facilities," she said.

Butler High School will cater for 600 students from years eight to 10 and 50 special needs students.

Baldivis High School will also cater for 600 students from years eight to 10.

The school is based on an industrial design form with a series of interlinked learning pavilions, including a performing arts centre, learning workshop area, cafeteria and sports hall.

Both schools will eventually expand to include year 11 and 12 students.

Finance Minister Simon O'Brien claimed that: "in line with the Government's commitment to reform in its capital works program, these contracts have been achieved with significant savings representing extremely good value for money".

Butler High School will be built using materials such as concrete blockwork, concrete panels and composite aluminium cladding, which are designed to reduce maintenance costs and recognise the proximity to the coast.

"The new Butler High School will include solar power technology that sets new standards in educational facilities in Western Australia," Mr O'Brien said.
