Petroleum Data and Information Management

The Institute for International Research will host a Petroleum Data and Information Management Conference over September 14 to 19 at the Mercure Hotel.

The conference is designed to give a comprehensive update on recent issues, developments and best practice in petroleum data and knowledge management.

A number of organisations will take part in the conference giving presentations over the two days including the Department of Industry and Resources (WA), Woodside Energy, BHP Billiton Petroleum, Chevron Texaco, and ConocoPhillips.

Key topics on the agenda are establishing what constitutes best practice in petroleum data management, facilitating petroleum exploration by better cooperation between Government and industry, examining the WA Government and industry working group on collaborative data management and analysing the latest technologies of real time data management, examining issues with current data quality and establishing baselines for quality assurance and lastly case studies on improved processes and techniques for data storage.

Day one of the conference will begin with an overview of what constitutes best practice in petroleum data management.

This segment will be broken down into four parts and will be presented by ConocoPhillips Australia technical architect Tony Gregory.

Following this presentation the first day will include the topic facilitating petroleum exploration by better cooperation between Government and industry, a presentation from Department of Industry and Resources WA petroleum data manager Jeffrey Howorth, reviewing the benefits of XML and data transfer, the implications of quality, automation, sustainability and other issues in the implementation of a state government metadata catalogue.

Day two of the conference will begin with a presentation from Shell EP R&D VP capabilities and integration Herbert Yuan, followed by Woodside Energy E&P data portfolio manager Fiona Tainish who will speak on management of E&P technical data and information in Woodside, the last presentation of the day will be from Chevron Texaco GIS data administrator Stephen Malin who will speak about the company’s strategy for linking GIS technology to core business to improve the quality operational and strategic decision making, the conference will then close with a final discussion comparing world-wide examples of data centres.
