Perth journalist Russell Woolf dies

Perth ABC journalist Russell Woolf has died overnight at the age of 56.

The passing of the longstanding media personality was announced by fellow ABC radio host Geoff Hutchinson this morning.

Mr Hutchison said Mr Woolf was a beloved friend and colleague and his death came as a huge shock. 

Mr Woolf began his career as a presenter for 747 Radiowest in Esperance in 1995, going on to join Kalgoorlie 6KG for a short stint before starting his debut role with the ABC as a resources reporter in WA's North West in 1997.

He went on to host several popular shows with the news outlet, including the ABC Perth Drive show and later the ABC Saturday Breakfast programme.

He was also weather presenter for the ABC's Western Australian news from 2007 to 2011. 

Mr Woolf is believed to have passed in his sleep.

Tributes for the late presenter have poured in, with Premier Mark McGowan describing Mr Woolf as a local media legend. 

"His unique and iconic voice, wit and personality made him loved by countless Western Australians," the premier tweeted. 

"For many of us, whether we knew him personally or not, it will feel like we've lost a friend today."
