Perth an attractive domain

THE Note was surprised to read this week that “Perth” is Australia’s most sought after online address after the domain regulator in Australia recently relaxed the restriction on using geographical names as .com.au domain names. The regulator anticipated a strong demand for such names and instituted a ballot system that attracted nearly 10,000 bids for over 2,700 available commercial geographic names, according to Perth patent and trademark specialist Lord & Company. Of all the names, perth.com.au was the most popular, followed by cairns.com.au, margaretriver.com.au and canberra.com.au. The Note is left to ponder why so many people would bid for a Canberra commercial domain ahead of balmy broome.com.au in 17th place.
