Mining services group Perenti has secured a $90 million contract extension for underground exploration at Newcrest Mining’s gold and copper project in Canada.

The Northbridge-based company’s subsidiary Barminco was awarded the 12-month contract extension from Newcrest.

The Red Chris mine is a joint venture between Newcrest and Imperial Metals Corporation and is located about 1,700 kilometres north of Vancouver in British Columbia.

Barminco has been contracted for work on the mine since 2021.

Perenti chief executive Mark Norwell said their North America strategy was to partner with tier-one operators and long-life assets.

“We continue to diligently process our North American growth strategy and have key executive management personnel based in the region to ensure we develop the right relationships and become engrained within the sector while remaining disciplines in the execution of our strategy,” he said.

Contract mining president Paul Muller said the company has worked closely with the joint venture partners on the Red Chris project.

“We have developed very strong relationships with the local communities including a partnership with the Tahltan Nation Development Corporation and are very pleased to be on site at Red Chris for the next 12 months.”

The contract win comes a week after Barminco was awarded a $30 million contract extension for underground mining activities at IGO Limited’s Flying Fox nickel mine east of Hyden.

The company has been the primary contractor at the nickel mine since 2004.

On the ASX, Perenti shares were up 1.67 per cent to trade at $1.22 at 3.30PM AEST.
