Our values show way ahead

A GATHERING of 14 highly intelligent Perth achievers recently sat around a lunch table and explored the future of our city.

These architects, educators, planners, scientists, academics, artists, from various suburbs and various income levels, all shared one value: a passion for this magnificent city - its present and its future.

We all agreed: Perth’s very special future is based on the immense strength of our community’s innovative capacity and energy, an ability to get on and make better things happen.

Perth, and all of WA, has quietly achieved excellence in innovation, technology, and creativity in many areas important for a healthy future, including : mining, oil, gas; medical infrastructure; shipbuilding; technology; food and wine; astronomy; dry land farming; fishing and aquaculture; museums, art galleries, libraries, among others.

Perth and WA’s brilliance comes from amazing individuals who disregard the establishment’s status quo, disregard their peer put downs, disregard the pursuit of money, to follow their passion to do something different just because it will be better.

Internationally noted European futurist Charles Handy remarked in Perth several years ago that the rest of the world was beginning to look to Australia, and particularly WA, to “show us how to do it better.”

As Handy and other great modern thinkers like Edward de Bono continue to point out, our exciting future in WA is not about how many dollars we make from selling our mining and agricultural resources or the number of corporate head offices in our city.

What these wise global minds recognise as the brilliant future for Perth and WA is the way we do the things we do. The values and attitudes that say our environment is as important as profit. That the health of our society is as important as profit.

And the growing recognition among us that the health of our environment and of our society are, in fact, the very things that will create our future healthy profit.
