Walsh awarded AICD gold medal

Rio Tinto chief executive, iron ore and Australia Sam Walsh has been awarded the 2012 WA gold medal by the Australian Institute of Company Directors in recognition of his achievements in the director community in Western Australia in promoting corporate governance and directorship, and for his not-for-profit contributions. Mr Walsh is chairman of the Black Swan State Theatre Company, the WA chapter of the Australia Business Arts Foundation and the Chamber of Arts and Culture WA. He is also Patron of the State Library of WA Foundation and UWA’s Hackett Foundation. In addition to his executive role at Rio Tinto, he holds a non-executive directorship on the board of Seven West Media and is vice president of the Australia-Japan Business Cooperation Committee.

Gill retires from Fleetwood

Mobile accommodation provider Fleetwood Corporation has announced that director Steve Gill will retire at this year’s annual general meeting. Mr Gill has been a Fleetwood director for 22 years. He served as an executive director for 16 years before retiring in 2006 to become a non-executive director of the company. The board has begun the search for a replacement.

Aquarius Platinum’s Murray resigns

Stuart Murray has resigned as chief executive officer of Aquarius Platinum and chairman of its principal subsidiary Aquarius Platinum (South Africa). Mr Murray has also terminated his directorships in all other Aquarius group companies. Aquarius director and former Investec Bank corporate finance executive Jean Nel has been appointed as chief operating officer of Aquarius and non-executive director Zwelakhe Mankazana, who is also an executive director of Savannah Resources, has been made interim non-executive chairman of the South African subsidiary. Mr Murray will remain with the company until end-March 2013.
