WITH nine years as the CEO of the Shire of Roebourne capping off a long local government career, Trevor Ruland has opted for a change, taking on the role of executive director of the Australia Day Council for Western Australia.

Mr Ruland said his role with the Australia Day Council would be similar in some ways to his time in local government.

"In local government a lot of what you’re doing is promoting your council," he said.

"With the Australia Day Council what we’re looking at is promoting Australia Day and the ethics that we, as Australians, would like to see reflected."

His first official function as executive director was the Western Australian of the Year awards.

Former executive director Jim Baker is remaining involved with the council in an advisory capacity for the time being.
