UWA vice-chancellor Alan Robson has been appointed chairman of the Group of Eight research universities. Established as an informal network of vice-chancellors in 1994, the Group of Eight was formally incorporated in 1999. It is made up of vice-chancellors from the Australian National University, Monash University, the University of Adelaide, the University of Melbourne, the University of New South Wales, the University of Queensland, the University of Sydney and the University of Western Australia. The group plays an advocacy role with regard to higher education policy, and aims to expand opportunities for Australian students. Professor Robson will assume his new role at the organisation’s board meeting in September.
