The state opposition has today announced additional roles for some members of the shadow cabinet following Labor MP Alannah MacTiernan's departure to federal politics.

Mark McGowan will take on the regional development portfolio, adding to responsibilities that include state development, housing and works and trade.

Sally Talbot will take on planning and climate change, adding to her portfolio of environment, lands and youth.

"Labor will continue to make sure the Barnett Government meets community expectations for good services and continues to provide the infrastructure needed to sustain a growing population," Opposition Leader Eric Ripper said.

He added the new responsibilities also showed Labor's ongoing commitment to climate change.

"The Barnett Government continues to show no interest in climate change. There is no climate change minister and no one to champion climate change initiatives like the development of renewable energy in our State," Mr Ripper said.

"Labor recognises the importance of working on strategies to reduce the impact of climate change on our environment - one of the greatest social, economic and environmental challenges facing Western Australians."

Ms MacTiernan stepped down last month in order to contest the federal seat of Canning at the next election, expected this year.
