Premier Colin Barnett today announced the redevelopment of the Claremont North East Precinct (NEP), surrounding Claremont Oval.

Mr Barnett said the redevelopment of the 9.4ha site, close to the Claremont train station, would provide many benefits to the community.

"Claremont Oval will remain an active sporting facility, set amidst a range of medium to high density housing options," he said.

"This major redevelopment will include about 500 residential apartments and a small number of townhouse lots.

"It will also provide approximately 4,000sqm of retail floor space and 7,000sqm of commercial floor space as part of an integrated mixed-use development within the precinct."

The Premier said the State Government would provide $16.5million towards the rebuilding of the Claremont Football Club facility.

"This is fantastic news for football fans and the new facility will include commercial opportunities to further enhance the area," he said.

"Coupled with the existing train station facilities and other transport options in Claremont, residents and visitors will be well connected to the city and surrounding areas.

"Claremont was identified as a Secondary Centre under the recently announced
Activity Centres Policy.

"The Claremont NEP redevelopment is essential to help Perth accommodate the city's anticipated population growth."

The project complements the Directions 2031, the framework and strategic plan for future growth of the metropolitan Perth and Peel region.

The redevelopment will be led by LandCorp with a project reference group to be established involving the Department of Planning; Town of Claremont; Public Transport Authority;
WA Police and Community Youth Centres; and the Claremont Football Club.

Preliminary works at the site are expected to begin in early 2011.
