New flights offer convention potential

AIRLINE access to Broome from Singapore will open the town up to corporate meetings and high yield incentive travel groups from Asia and Europe, says Perth Convention Bureau managing director Anne-Maree Ferguson.

Ms Ferguson said the Bali to Broome weekly service gave the ability to combine a Bali or Singapore trip with a meeting in Broome. This would enhance the town’s appeal with Sydney and Melbourne corporations.

“It offers a ‘last frontier’ experience combining international standard accommodation and infrastructure with an outback adventure,” Ms Ferguson said.

She said the bureau’s sales managers who attended trade shows and participated in trade missions in Europe and Asia encountered strong interest in the region among incentive buyers.

However, additional costs and time in travelling from Perth to the Kimberley made it difficult to generate volume business for the region.

“Now there is direct access,” Ms Ferguson said.

“Broome will become more competitive and affordable and, given its freshness as a destination, I think it has enormous potential,” she said.
