New chief for Office of Energy

The State Government has confirmed the appointment of Jason Banks as the coordinator of energy and chief executive officer of the Office of Energy.

Energy minister Francis Logan said Mr Banks joined the Office of Energy in 2000 and had held several senior positions before becoming the acting coordinator in April, 2006.

"Mr Banks has had a strong involvement in the major gas and electricity reforms that have been implemented in Western Australia in recent years," Mr Logan said.

"He will now lead the office through the next phase of reforms, including an assessment of electricity retail tariff arrangements, the introduction of full retail contestability in the electricity market and the roll out of smart metres to give consumers greater choice in how they use electricity.

"The office will also be is taking a key role in major climate change policies including emissions trading, mandatory renewable energy targets and energy efficiency programs.

"I am confident Mr Banks has the ability to lead the office in achieving the outcomes of these initiatives given his qualifications, experience, enthusiasm and vision for the energy industry in WA."

Mr Banks, 37, is a commerce and economics graduate from Murdoch University and has a diverse range of experience within the WA public sector.

He also participated in the Department of the Premier and Cabinet's "Pathways to Leadership Program".
