New Norcia bakery wins US support

NEW Norcia Bakeries’ nut cake, the latest export offering from the wood-fired ovens of the Benedictine Monastery in New Norcia, has won praise from international consumers including US House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Mr Gingrich was given the WA company’s product by Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer Senator Ian Campbell at the recent International Monetary Fund meetings.

“Ian Campbell is a customer of ours and he wanted to take something across that was produced in regional Australia,” New Norcia Bakeries director Kingsley Sullivan explained.

New Norcia has just launched the nut cake in new packaging in an attempt to make it big overseas.

The design of the new packaging is similar to the one created by Perth company REB for New Norcia’s export product, Dom Salvado Pan Chocolatti.

“We developed the Dom Salvado Pan Chocolatti as a new product last year and realised at the time that being exposed to the international market, and to be competitive, the packaging had to reflect the quality,” Mr Sullivan said.

He said the decision to repackage the nut cake product was made easier after comparing the old nut cake packaging with the new stylish olive and gold Dom Salvado Pan Chocolatti packaging.

Mr Sullivan is waiting on the newest design from REB for the New Norcia Almond Biscotti.

REB creative director John Emery said his company was currently in the creation phase but would maintain an image that reinforces the parent brand.

It has been working with New Norcia for little more than 12 months and was responsible for the branding and packaging of Dom Salvado Pan Chocolatti, repackaging the existing nut cake product and developing the New Norcia logos.

REB won a gold award for packaging for the Dom Salvado Pan Chocolatti from the Perth Art Directors Club.

Mr Sullivan said the link with REB was very much a partnership.

“The more they know us and our market the better product they can produce,” he said.

Since Mr Sullivan began the company in 1993 it has enjoyed national and international success exporting to the UK, Singapore, Hong Kong, and the US.

“We’ve had a lot of interest from interstate to produce the bread there,” he said.

“We could set up there but that’s not where we want to go. The bread part will always remain in WA.”

Mr Sullivan (with fellow New Norcia director Mark Young) has been nominated for the Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

He said it was recognition of the company’s ability to benchmark themselves with the world’s best.
