Oil and gas firm Apache Corporation has announced a new managing director for its Perth-based Australian operating unit Apache Energy.

Former director of operations Faron Thibodeaux has been promoted to the role of Apache Energy managing director and region vice president.

Previous managing director Thomas Maher will lead Apache's operations in Egypt.

Apache Energy is developing the Julimar natural gas project, which will feed Chevron's Wheatstone LNG project, as well as the Varanus Island compression project and the Balnaves and Coniston oil projects.

"Australia will continue to play a key role in Apache's global growth," chief operating officer Rodney Eichler said.

"Tom has done an excellent job advancing these projects. Faron has demonstrated effective leadership for our operations team and will be a strong leader for the region."

Thibodeaux joined Apache in 2008, and previously worked for Chevron and Unocal in engineering and management positions across assignments in the Gulf of Mexio, Indonesia, Cambodia and Thailand.
