Civil and mining contractor NRW Holdings has been awarded an airport upgrade contract with BHP at its Olympic Dam project in South Australia.

The scope of works under the contract, valued at $48 million, is split into airside and landside works.

NRW will complete bulk earthworks, pavement construction and drainage works for a new 1.86-kilometre runway as well as refurbish the existing taxiway and extend the apron areas.

The Perth-based contractor will also provide all services for an upgrade to the existing terminal building and surrounding infrastructure.

NRW managing director Jules Pemberton said the company had a long history with BHP in its iron ore, coal and nickel divisions.

“This contract marks the first project for the copper operations,” he said.

The project will be completed by NRW’s recently acquired BGC Contracting business.

The works will begin in late March and are expected to take 37 weeks to complete.

The contract comes one day after a consortium including NRW was announced as one of two shortlisted proponents for Western Australia’s $850 million Bunbury Outer Ring project.

The Southwest Connex Alliance comprises NRW, Acconia, MACA’s civil business, Aecom and Aurecon.

It was shortlisted alongside a competing consortium led by CPB Contractors.

The two consortia will submit detailed proposals to design and construct the Bunbury Outer Ring Road.

The contract is expected to be awarded before the end of the year, with construction likely to begin in 2021.
