Mining TV show planned

WESTERN Australian Television managing director Patrick Cunneen has announced plans for a new national weekly TV program called Mining Australia.

The half-hour program will look at all aspects of the mining industry, with segments profiling two mining concerns each episode.

It will feature interviews with staff from mining camps and industry experts, and deal with issues such as the environment, mining techniques, native title, metal and mineral prices, and the stock market.

Mr Cunneen said the mining industry had suffered a lot from negative press in recent years, with “much of the publicity understating the vital role that mining plays in the wealth and economic well being of Aust-ralia”. He said the program would aim to keep small investors informed.

Set to premiere in early 2001, the program is a panel format show with both in-studio and on location reports and interviews.

The first pilot episode in the 13-week series includes C.I.B.C Eyres Reed chairman David Reed’s new tax plans and strategies designed to stimulate exploration and Black Range Minerals CEO Jim Askew.

“We make no secret of the fact the show is funded by direct sponsorship – but in this case it has no altruistic connotation – the benefits to the companies featured will far outweigh the costs and those companies will enjoy considerable positive exposure,” he said.
