Tuesday, 12 October, 2004 - 22:00

Over Wednesday October 27 and Thursday October 28 the Institute of International Research will hold the Australian Mine Safety Conference for 2004 at the Mercure Hotel.

The conference is in recognition of the importance that safety plays in the mining industry and will cover the changing laws in this field and the increasing number of penalties that are incurred.

The aim of the conference will be to directly confront this issue and build awareness to achieve zero harm.

Keynote speakers at the event will be Minister for State Development the Hon Clive Brown, National Occupational Health and Safety Commission Australia chief executive officer Robin Stewart-Crompton, Worksafe WA executive director and commissioner Nina Lyhne and National Safety Council of Australia chief executive officer Eric Curtis.

Case studies will be presented from Alcoa Alumina Australia, Xstrata Copper, Argyle Diamonds, Port Waratah Coal Services, Roche Mining, Barminco, Simcoa Operations Pty Ltd and Clough Limited to illustrate best practice and show how other mining operators are managing safety.

Research and development in this field will also be discussed with presentations covering new technologies, body vibration and fatigue management.

At the completion of the presentation there will be two half-day workshops on Friday October 29 that apply mining safety to emergency response and productivity.

These workshops will also focus on safe behaviour, contractors managing safety, safety leadership, fatality prevention systems, risk assessment and positive performance indicators.

Registrations for the event can be made with the Institute of International Research starting from $2634.50.
