Mauritius tastes WA

WA food, wine and aboriginal art has been showcased at a recent festival at the Labourdonnais Waterfront Hotel in Port Louis, Mauritius.

The Australia Festival was a joint venture between the Department of Commerce and Trade, Bunbury Regional Trade Office and the Australian High Commission in Mauritius.

Chef Brad Ford from Frasers Restaurant in Kings Park prepared more than 75 different examples of food and wine supplied by seventeen WA companies.

A major exhibition of WA aboriginal art was provided by the Indigenart Gallery in Subiaco.

The festival included a week of performances from Richard Walley playing the didgeridoo with his aboriginal dance group.

WA exports about $20 million of product to Mauritius annually.

While competition is strong from Madagascar and Europe, the South African market continues to struggle – opening up many opportunities for the supply of food, services and manufactured products to the Mauritian market.

A direct shipping service from Fremantle to Mauritius has further aided opportunities in this small but lucrative market.
