Mandurah Junction a step closer

Monday, 29 November, 2010 - 11:18

A new housing, retail and commercial development close to Mandurah train station is a step closer after the WA Planning Commission approved the Outline Development Plan.

Mandurah Junction is a 15ha site, between Fremantle Road at the Mandurah train line, and will include 950 homes, housing up to 2000 people, plus 9,500sqm of retail and commercial space.

Lands Minister Brendon Grylls said the approval of the ODP followed an extensive community and stakeholder consultation process.

"LandCorp is working to facilitate a variety of housing choices to support Mandurah's growing population, which is predicted to reach 117,000 people by 2021," Mr Grylls said.

"By working with the community and the City of Mandurah, LandCorp is aiming to achieve high sustainability standards in a vibrant new community which is expected to provide a catalyst for revitalisation of the surrounding area," he said.

Planning Minister John Day said Mandurah Junction was in line with the new
Activity Centres policy and principles outlined in the Directions 2031 and Beyond planning framework.

"The policy encourages strategic retail and commercial centres to grow and incorporate a better mix of shopping, office space, residential, recreational and community amenities," Mr Day said.

"Activity centres such as Mandurah Junction will evolve into more accessible and vibrant nodes of economic and social activity, and enable the community to go to work, enjoy leisure activities and shop without having to travel far."

LandCorp's Mandurah Junction project has taken a significant step forward following the Western Australian Planning Commission's approval of the Outline Development Plan (ODP).

Lands Minister Brendon Grylls said the approval of the ODP followed an extensive community and stakeholder consultation process.

Mandurah Junction will capitalise on its location next to the Mandurah train station by delivering a range of housing types with a focus on diversity and affordable living as well as designs to reduce household energy and water consumption.

"LandCorp is working to facilitate a variety of housing choices to support Mandurah's growing population, which is predicted to reach 117,000 people by 2021," Mr Grylls said.

"When completed, the 15ha site, located between Fremantle Road and the train line, should include 950 homes, housing up to 2,000 people, plus 9,500sqm of retail and commercial space.

"Mandurah Junction will bring new opportunities for the Mandurah community through enhanced employment and business prospects, recreation facilities and amenities.

"By working with the community and the City of Mandurah, LandCorp is aiming to achieve high sustainability standards in a vibrant new community which is expected to provide a catalyst for revitalisation of the surrounding area."

To support affordable housing choices, LandCorp recently secured $2million in funding under the Federal Government's Housing Affordability Fund.

The funds will be used for construction and landscaping for the project's central north-south road and services associated with Stage One works planned to start in early 2012.

Savings will be passed on to eligible homebuyers who can each save up to $36,000 on 55 residential lots.
