Making a career of shopping

JONES Lang LaSalle marketing manager Cathy Turner is the latest addition to the ranks of nominees for the Business News 40 Under 40 program.

Ms Turner recently became one of the most decorated professionals in the field of shopping centre marketing when she won four categories at the WA Shopping Centre Marketing Awards for her work at Lakeside Joondalup Shopping City.

Although she has spent only 18 months at Lakeside, Ms Turner has implemented a number of promotions and campaigns that have greatly boosted the profile of the centre.

Aided by these campaigns, Lakeside recently won Best Shopping Centre in the 30,000sqm to 45,000sqm category, beating centres such as Belmont Forum and Whitford City.

The awards also recognised the strength of Ms Turner’s Mother’s Day Giveaway promotion, Kids Club program and new advertising designs.

The Lakeside Kids Club has been particularly popular, with 3500 members joining since last October.

Lakeside owner, ING Group, was so impressed with Ms Turner’s results it recently asked her to weave her magic at Forest Chase.

“My role is to increase the sales and traffic through a shopping centre,” Ms Turner said.

“The ideas (for programs) come to you by looking at the research and demographics ... and you have to listen to what the retailers are telling you.

“And I never think inside the box ... I brainstorm to find a better or a different way to do things.”

Ms Turner has been in the shopping centre marketing industry for 11 years and is a Property Council of Australia certified marketing manager.

She was nominated by Julie Clayton from Woodside Energy’s Human Resources Department.
