Awarded $89 million Darwin Road Contract

Macmahon Holdings Limited announced today that it has been awarded the contract for Stage Two of the Tiger Brennan Drive Extension Project in Darwin. The project is worth $89 million, which includes government project delivery costs.

The Tiger Brennan Drive Extension project includes the design and construction of 7.5 kilometres of road works, including a four lane dual highway from Berrimah Road to the Stuart Highway, and a grade separated interchange with provision for pedestrians.

Macmahon, which is currently completing Stage One of the project, will work with SKM to start the Stage Two detailed design process immediately. Construction is scheduled to get underway early next year to enable the project to be completed in 2010.

Stage Two will involve Macmahon directly employing up to 150 people, with a focus on maximising Aboriginal employment through a partnership with the Larrakia Development Corporation and the local Aboriginal community.

Chief Executive Officer, Nick Bowen, said that in order to deliver this project within the earliest possible timeframe Macmahon participated in the 'Early Contractor Involvement' (ECI) procurement model, the first time this model had been used for a Northern Territory road project.

"The innovative ECI procurement model allowed Macmahon to demonstrate that it can deliver significant time and cost efficiencies on a major project, working in partnership with the Department of Planning and Infrastructure," he said.

"Tiger Brennan Stage Two represents a major investment for both the Federal and Northern Territory Government's and is a tangible commitment to new infrastructure that will support Darwin's growth.

"We are also very pleased to be involved in a substantial, long term project in the Northern Territory that will provide additional opportunities to employ and train Aboriginal people," Mr Bowen said.

Macmahon has operated in the Northern Territory for more than 42 years and major projects have included the Alice Springs to Darwin Railway, the Darwin City Waterfront redevelopment, Blacktip gas project, Alcan Gove, Bradshaw Training Area and the Gemco tailings storage facility on Groote Eylandt.

Macmahon also currently manages the Shoal Bay Landfill facility in Darwin.
