MG Corporation has signed a memorandum of understanding with Cubbie Farming to investigate the feasibility of growing cotton in land located in the East Kimberley region.

The agreement paves the way for MG, a group representing the Miriwoong and Gajerrong people, to use land to which it claims native title for cotton growing trials.

The corporation is currently in negotiations with the state government for ownership of the land, with executive chair Lawford Benning saying the MOU was the first step towards MG developing a substantial agricultural portfolio.

MG Corporation is currently very focused on realising our economic potential, so that we can generate income from our land to fund social programs to benefit our community,” he said.

“We are open to exploring new ways to derive income, and are keen to partner with companies that can work with us to achieve our goals.

“We are also committed to creating sustainable opportunities for MG people, and agriculture may be an employment and training pathway in the future.”

Cubbie director Paul Brimblecombe said farming the lots in question was a significant step forward for the two companies.

“Similar to MGC, Cubbie share the same view when it comes to creating opportunities for those who wish to be involved in the agricultural sector,” he said.
