Licences extended for AMX

Tuesday, 21 March, 2000 - 21:00
SOUTH Perth-based AMX Re-sources, which recently acquired Semaphore Telecommunica-tions, has received confirmation from the Australian Communi-cations Authority that all city licences held by Semaphore are valid until the end of March 2002.

The licences were previously understood to expire in September 2001, but a procedural error has given AMX six months longer to utilise the city licences.

The ACA did not comply with the Radio Communications Act 1992, under which it has a twenty-eight day period from declaration by the Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts to gazette the declaration.

The period expired prior to gazettal.

The ACA does not expect the Minister to make a new declaration before the end of March.

Semaphore holds fifty-two licences permitting it to operate Wireless Local Loop and Internet access equipment in the 3.4 GHz spectrum in Australia.
