Liberal's PMH funding shortfall: ALP

The Labor Party says it has exposed a shortfall in the Liberal Party's costings for the Princess Margaret Hospital with Labor saying the opposition has only allocated $8 million in its budget as opposed to its $640 million promise.

The state opposition has promised to build a new children's hospital by 2014 for about $640 million should it win Saturday's election.

However the ALP today pointed out that $8 million had been allocated for planning over the next four years.

Premier Alan Carpenter said the lack of funding had been exposed in the Liberal Party's campaign costings document released yesterday.

"The Liberal Party is clearly not serious about our children's health," Mr Carpenter said.

"First, they committed to building a private hospital to replace PMH, and now they are offering no commitment at all.

"This proves yet again that they have no policies and are not ready to govern. They are a risk to our hospital plans."

Mr Carpenter added the Health Department had estimated the cost of building a new children's hospital at the QEII Medical Centre site to be $800 million.

The Labor party has pledged to build a new children's hospital by 2016

"The Liberal Party's credibility is further undermined by the fact that they have made no financial provision for the demolition and replacement of a University of WA building, that sits right where the new children's hospital is planned to go," Mr Carpenter said.

"That is another $111million cost the Liberals have failed to provide for."
