Leighton Contractors have won a $240 million contract extension for mining services at OneSteel’s South Middleback Ranges (SMR) iron ore operations in South Australia.

The 12-month contract, awarded to Leighton’s wholly-owned subsidiary HWE Mining, is for supervision, equipment, labour, materials and infrastructure at the Eyre Peninsula mine with provision for a further four-year extension.

Leighton Contractors executive general manager Steven Keyser said HWE Mining has been the major contractor on the site since 1998, and the company’s proven track record in iron ore mining was a key factor in securing the contract.

“This contract extension gives Leighton Contractors the opportunity to continue to work in partnership with OneSteel, Australia’s premier steel manufacturer, and be part of the future success of the SMR operations.”

Leighton Contractors provides complete mining service at SMR’s mining and processing operations, employing approximately 600 people at the site.
