Leighton Contractors has won a $126 million engineering and construction deal for Inpex’s $US34 billion Ichthys natural gas processing facility in Darwin.

The works package includes a 12-month design and procurement period, followed by 21 months of construction to deliver an operations office, control buildings, training facilities, warehouses, workshops, laboratories and other assorted infrastructure.

At peak production, the contract is expected to create 150 jobs.

On-site construction is due to start in July 2013, and be completed by May 2015.

Leighton Contractors managing director Craig Laslett said the company was immensely proud to be selected to deliver a second major package of works for the Ichthys project.

“To be awarded another package on this major project demonstrates our expertise in delivering construction packages in the oil and gas sector,” Mr Laslett said in a statement.

“We have been working in the Northern Territory for some time and we are looking forward to continuing our strong relationship with JKC to deliver works packages within the Ichthys LNG project’s onshore facilities.”

The Ichthys project is being built to produce 8.4 million tonnes of LNG each year, piped from the Browse Basin off the WA coast, to a processing facility in Darwin.
