Construction and contracting giant Leighton has announced it has unified its HWE Mining and Leighton Contractors operations under the new brand Leighton Contractors' Mining Division.

Leighton Contractors had run its mining services division under both the HWE Mining and Leighton Contractors banners since its acquisition of HWE in 2006.

Leighton Contractors executive general manager Steven Keyser said the sale of part of HWE Mining's operations and services to BHP Billiton last September was the catalyst for the branding change.

“Today's move minimises complexity and removes duplication, while better reflecting our key market focus in open cut and underground mining operations,” Mr Keyser said.

“But while there is a new name and new unity, we will continue to utilise all our fundamental mining qualities, capabilities, experience and values forged over many years

Leighton Contractor's Western Australian client list includes Rio Tinto, Fortescue Metals Group, Newcrest Mining, Ramelius Resources, Consolidated Minerals and Norton Gold Fields.

Across Australia, Leighton Contractors Mining Division employs more than 4,000 staff.

Leighton Holdings, the parent company of Leighton Contractors, also operates mining contracting services under the Thiess and John Holland brands.

Thiess and John Holland will not be affected by the changes.

At 1:25PM, WST, Leighton Holdings shares were up slightly, trading at $17.82.
