Labor commitment to NFP sector welcomed

Children's charity The Smith Family has welcomed Federal Labor's commitment to the not-for-profit sector.

Labor has today announced a plan to lessen the regulatory burden on the sector.

The measures do to this include setting up an office for the Not-for-Profit Sector to drive and coordinate policy agenda.

This would also include a new focus on national harmonisation and support this with a Not-for-Profit Sector Reform Council made up of representatives from across the sector.

Further to this, Labor promised a scoping study to determine the feasibility and design options of a national "one-stop-shop" regulator for the not-for-profit sector.

It's hoped that a regulator would streamline the complex and incoherent regulatory arrangement currently in place and boost education and standard levels.

"This commitment clearly demonstrates the Government's acknowledgement of the Not-for-Profit sector as a key contributor to a prosperous economy and cohesive community in Australia," CEO of The Smith Family Elaine Henry said.

"It recognises that the lifeblood of the sector depends not only on reducing red tape but also on embedding collaborative social innovation to inform policy and solve our seemingly intractable problems. We look forward to working with the Government to deliver on these historic reforms," Ms Henry said.
