Leisel Jones has missed out on a gold medal in the 200 metre breaststroke, coming second behind Rebecca Soni of the United States.

Jones was the favourite to win the event and was previously the only female to have broken the 2 minute and 22 seconds barrier for the distance.

However this morning Soni managed to set a new world record time with a swim of 2 min 20.22 seconds while Jones swam 2 min and 22.05 seconds.

Earlier this week, Jones won gold in the 100m breaststroke.

Later in the morning, Libby Trickett also missed out on claiming another gold medal in the 100m freestyle event.

Trickett was ninth fastest for the event and just managed to secure a spot in the finals after a Chinese swimmer was earlier disqualified.

Britta Steffen from Germany claimed the gold medal in the finals with a time of 53.12 seconds with Trickett clocking 53.16 seconds.
