Industry Comment - Network of Concerned Farmers

The Network of Concerned Farmers welcomes a Federal Government study to assess the effectiveness of quality management systems in identifying, tracing and segregating genetically modified agricultural products.

It seems the Federal Government has realised the release of GM crops will impose real economic impacts on rural Australia and that current arrangements with the States are not adequate.

The Government must negotiate a moratorium with the States on the commercial release of GM canola, prior to a full assessment of the economic impact on the industry.

The Gene Technology Grains Committee has attributed unacceptable costs and liabilities for uncontrollable GM contamination onto growers, while the product developers assume no responsibility at all.
