ILUKA has given the go-ahead for a $43 million mining and mineral concentrating project for Gingin.

Production from the Gingin operation is due to start in mid 2005 and, over a three-and-a-half year period, is expected to deliver about 600,000 tonnes of ilmenite for use as feedstock in Iluka’s synthetic rutile kilns.

This equates to about 360,000t of synthetic rutile from the Geraldton operations.

It will also produce 310,000t of chloride grade ilmenite for sale to a major US customer, 75,000t of rutile and 65,000t of zircon.

The project will be located in an area adjacent to the Brand Highway, about three kilometres west-north-west of the Gingin townsite on land currently used for agriculture, and has been extensively cleared.

A total of 280 hectares will be used for mining and concentrating operations.

An environmental protection statement for the project has already been approved and application for a works approval has been submitted to the appropriate authorities.
